So Thursday evening 12/11/09 things started getting a lttle airy in our neck of the woods weather wise. It had been raining and the temperature began to drop. Our power went out around 12:00 am on the 12th. All night I could hear trees cracking and breaking and falling. That along with the ice hitting the house.
That morning when we got up and still had no power it was a bit troubling. rett called PSNH and when the recording said approximently 300,000 homes were without power we were not getting ours back anytime soon. So with a bar ech lef o our cell phones and a quarter of a tank of as, we tried to head out to Milford. Trees blocked the two roads to get out, so we were trapped at home with no heat, power, water, and a little bit a food.
We passed the day by playing games, going for a walk, playing music. We were able to get the gas burners lit, and that gave us a little heat, and we were able to cook some left overs for dinner.
We snuggled up the 4 of us in bed and tried to stay warm. I didn't sleep much constantly trying to pull the blankets up over the kids who kept wiggling them off. It was quite cold by midnight.
Around midnight though, we noticed our neighbors were able to get out and buy a generator, which meant we could probably get out next day.
So when we got up on Saturday, we threw clothes in suitcases and ventured to get to Hillsborough to get gas and then to moms in Milford for who knows how long. It wasn't easy and full of detours, but we got to Hillsborough and it was packed with people trying to get gas and food. We stopped atMcDonalds to get te kids some food and had a half hour wait after ordering. Then we popped back home to get the cat and off to Milford. The trees were beautiful glazed in ice, but it looked like a disaster area. So many trees and power lines down everywhere. It ook a lot of detours, but we made it to Milford, where my mom never lost power.
We were not able to get back home till the fllowing Thursday. We were fortunate not to have any pipes burst while we were gone. And hogh it was a pain infalting and deflating the air mattresses every morning and every night. It was really nice having the conveniences of living in town. And Memere, Auntie, and Uncle cooking for us! In the end though...it was REALY nice to get back home!
