Butterflies

During a swap day with friends we aquired the butterfly growig kit. Xander was so excited to do this. We sent away for our caterpillars and in about 2 weeks we had 10. They came 5 in a container. Special food was in the containers and breathng holes, so you just set them aside and watch for the changes. Xander was constantly checking on them and talking with them. After about 10 days or so, they moved to the lid of the jar hung upside down and formed their cacoons. We then transferred them to the "butterfly treehouse" waiting for them to hatch. In about 7 days we had beautiful Paintd Lady butterflies. We fed them sugar water and oranges. When all the butterflies were hatched we waited for a sunny warm day to let them go. It was incredible. Xander gently would pick one up one by one and send them off. They stayed in the yard a bit and he kept following them around. It was very sweet! It was also a lot of fun to learn more about these incredible creatures and see the transformation right in front of us.
